When we’re children, it was easy to take our range of motion and great flexibility for granted. But as we grow older, a number small injuries, and the effects of wear and tear can decrease our ability to move the way we used to. Eventually this can make it hard to continue on with our daily activities. Even simple things such as picking things off the floor or even trying to tie your shoes can be difficult when your movements are restricted. Great news, regular chiropractic care can help increase both range of motion and flexibility.
A study performed in 2001 by researchers at the Phillip Chiropractic Research Centre of RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, and published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics discovered that chiropractic treatments improvement range of motion in the 105 patients who took part in this study. There were three stages of this study, in which each of the participants were given no adjustments, fake adjustments or true adjustments. In each stage, the patients that were given the true adjustments showed a large amount of improvement in the range of motion, which did not occur for the other two test groups.
Decreases in motion and flexibility can result in an increased chance of disability. Any injury or degeneration can cause pain, inflammation and tightness, decreasing range of motion and flexibility. So, people start avoiding activities that involve the injured body parts, either consciously or unconsciously. This results in a “use it or lose it” mentality. Absence of exercise, will cause the muscles and joints to stiffen, which can cause scar tissue and adhesions to form, which in turn will further reduce mobility. Over time this could cause a person can become totally debilitated.
A chiropractor uses spinal corrections and treatments to other parts of the body to realign the joints and bones. This will decrease pain, restore motion, and increase flexibility. It will also aid in balance and coordination. These treatments can be accomplished by hands or manually. There are also many other techniques in a chiropractors arsenal of techniques that can be used to increase circulation and increase function, such as electrical stimulation and ultrasound. Chiropractors can also recommend specific exercises for you to do at home to improve your strength and flexibility to help in conjunction with the benefits of your adjustments.
A lot of people will restrict their activities because of their back pain. The inability to perform their activities is a common complaint heard by most chiropractors. To help reduce or eliminate the cause of back and joint pain, one should look towards regular chiropractic check-ups and adjustments. This will help to maintain your daily activities and keep you more flexible way into your senior years.
